Atlanta high school sports news from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

How the boys teams stand as new year begins

With the holiday tournaments behind them and the school break almost complete, Class AAAAAA basketball teams have turned their attention to the heart of the schedule.

Only one boys team made it to January with an unbeaten record – Evans is 14-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 3. The Knights have already matched their victory total from last season, when they finished 14-14 and lost in the first round of the state playoffs.

Tri-Cities and Sprayberry have losses on their records but are off to perfect starts in region play. Sprayberry is 12-2 overall and leading Region 6 with a 6-0 record. Tri-Cities is 10-4 overall but leading Region 5 with a 6-0 mark. The Bulldogs will travel to Douglas County (10-4, 5-1) Friday for a key region showdown.

Here’s a look at the boys region standings going into Friday’s games (with region records, followed by overall records). Note that the records are taken from MaxPreps, the official record-keeper for the Georgia High School Association, and that some of those records have not been fully updated. Girls standings will be posted on Tuesday.
