Heritage-Conyers announced the hiring of former Georgia safety Corey Johnson as its head football coach on Monday.

Johnson is head boys basketball coach at Jackson and will finish the season there before taking over at Heritage. He also is an assistant football coach at Jackson. He previously assisted in football under another former Georgia player and teammate, Robert Edwards, at Greene County.

Johnson, 42, was a three-year starter (1994-96) and two-time All-SEC player and played several seasons in the Arena Football League. Johnson played high school ball at Forest Park, where Hines Ward was a teammate.

Heritage won a school-record 10 games in 2011 but has finished with decreasing win totals each season since, including a 1-9 record in 2015 under Wendell Early.
