Jeff Herron, who won four football state championships at Camden County and Oconee County before taking the Prince Avenue Christian job in 2013, will replace Mickey Conn as head coach at Grayson.

Herron is best known for building Camden County into a state power starting in 2000. Camden won state championships in 2003, 2008 and 2009. His record over 26 seasons is 273-51. His teams – which include Walton, Cedar Shoals, Wheeler and Oconee County in the 1990s – have never failed to have a winning season.

Herron made a surprise move in 2013 when he retired from public schools and took a job at Class A private school Prince Avenue. His Prince Avenue teams were 10-2, 9-2 and 12-1.

Prince Avenue announced the news in a statement published by the Athens Banner-Herald, the first to report the news

“Coach Herron is an exceptional leader and football tactician highly coveted by other schools,” head of school Seth Hathaway said. “A school our size has been blessed to enjoy three years of service from a man of his caliber and experience who has provided improvements to our program that will continue to benefit our players even after his departure.”

Grayson won seven region titles and one state championship under Conn, who left to take a position on Clemson University’s support staff. Conn started Grayson’s program in 2000 and was 137-48. Grayson has won at least 10 games in eight of the past nine seasons and was 13-1 in 2015.

Grayson again is expected to be a championship contender in the new Class AAAAAAA. Quarterback Chase Brice, one of several Division I recruits, is committed to Clemson.
