GHSA Swimming Championship Finals Recap

The GHSA state swimming finals took place Saturday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Individual medals along with team titles were awarded to the AAAAAAA, AAAAAA, AAAAA-AAAA and AAA-A divisions. 

The North Gwinnett boys took home the gold in the state’s highest classification, scoring 319 points while four-time defending champs Brookwood (304.5) and West Forsyth (236) finished second and third, respectively. The Lassiter girls claimed first place in Class AAAAAAA with a score of 332.5. In second were two-time defending champs Brookwood (307) with Walton (291) placing third. Brookwood’s Nathaniel Stoffle was key to the Bronco’s success. He took home the gold in two events, scoring a time of 48.43 in the 100-yard Backstroke and a 48.95 in the 100-yard butterfly. Lassiter’s Elizabeth Tilt (54.85) took home the gold in the 100-yard butterfly, with North Forsyth’s Hailey Galbraith (55.28) finishing second and Brookwood’s Reagan Sweeney (55.36) taking the bronze. Tilt also claimed the silver medal in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.04, while Brookwood’s Lily Burke won the gold with a time of 2:01.98. Burke’s time of 51.12 also earned her the gold medal in the 100-yard freestyle.

In Class AAAAAA, the Dalton boys reclaimed their spot at the top with a first-place score of 445. In second was Alpharetta (411) while Johns Creek (305) finished third. For the girls, Cambridge claimed its first ever state title with 276 points. In second was Alpharetta (245) with Centennial (209) placing third. The Dalton boys took home the gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay, scoring a time of 3:04.82 to best second-place Alpharetta (3:06.03) and third-place Johns Creek (3:11.37). Henry Bethel took home the gold for Dalton in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.31. Bethel (1:47.66) also claimed the gold in the 200-yard individual medley, winning a narrow race between Johns Creek’s Andrew Simmons (1:47.96). Cambridge’s Sophie Brison performed with excellence in her events. She won the gold in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.68, and gold in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.47. Cambridge’s Abigail Grottle also took home two individual gold medals, placing first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.89) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.86).

In Class AAAAA-AAAA, Marist was well represented by both the boys and girls team. The boys took first place with 370 points, besting second place Riverwood (221) by 149 points. Starr’s Mill claimed third with 219 points. The Marist girls finished third with 254 points, while Chamblee (259) finished second. The Blessed trinity girls took home the gold with a total team score of 276. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Starr’s Mill boys (3:13.37) narrowly bested Marist (3:13.41) to take home the gold medal. Marist’s Quinn Harron swam strongly for his team. His efforts helped him finish first in the 200-yard individual medley (1:48.59) and the 100-yard breaststroke (54.21). The Starr’s Mill boys took control of the 100-yard butterfly with Seth Roach (50.99) and Michael Tucker (51.52) finishing first and second, respectively. 

Westminster swept the Class AAA-A division for the third year in a row with both boys and girls teams finishing in first place. The Boys finished with 552 points while the girls scored 535. For the boys, Wesleyan (255) came in second while Calhoun (214.5) placed third. Greater Atlanta Christian (282) took second for the girls with Wesleyan (171) taking third. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the Westminster boys took home the gold following a stellar race. Their time of 3:10.05 bested second place Wesleyan (3:15.71) by a significant margin. The Westminster girls also took first place in the event, achieving a time of 3:26.73 to best second place Lovett (3:43.31). Mt. Paran’s Mitchell Norton dominated the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.71. In second was Atlanta International’s Caleb Duval (1:41.22) with Charlie Stout (1:42.11) from George Walton Academy taking third.
