In Week 7, two Class AA ranked teams in the top five suffered defeat in No. 3 Thomasville and No. 4 Bremen, while the rest of the top 10 that played won big.
The No. 5 Rockmart Yellow Jackets (6-0, 3-0 7-AA) could possibly slide into the No. 3 spot after their 56-0 dismantling of Chattooga (4-2, 2-1). They posted their second shutout in a row and third in their last four games. They've yet to give up more than two scores this season.
Speaking of defense, the top-ranked Hapeville Charter Hornets (5-0, 3-0 6-AA) beat the Douglass Astros (5-1, 3-1) — in a game that likely served as the region championship — by a score of 24-0.
You can read my coverage of the Hapeville Charter-Douglass game here.
With the win, the Hornets have now outscored opponents 220-3 — including four shutouts in five games — with the only points surrendered being a 30-yard field goal to then-No. 2 Heard County.
“Our defense has done this all year long,” Hapeville Charter coach Winston Gordon said. “I didn’t expect anything different. (Hornets defensive coordinator Kevin Pope) did a great job of getting those guys ready all week long and we did what we do.”
I’ll talk more about Hapeville Charter’s dominance in Tuesday’s “AA in brief.”
Now on to the teams that lost.
The No. 3 Thomasville Bulldogs were edged 42-38 by AAA's unranked Crisp County. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-2 in their last non-region contest and will play No. 10 Brooks County next week in their 1-AA opener. Both Cade Cromer of the Cordele Dispatch and Clint Thompson for the Thomasville Times-Enterprise covered the game.
The No. 4 Bremen Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the season to the No. 2 Callaway Cavaliers, 37-25, in a critical 5-AA showdown. The Cavs are 5-0, 2-0 and the Blue Devils drop to 4-1, 0-1. The LaGrange Daily News' Kevin Eckelberry and the Times-Georgian's Corey Cusick have game write-ups.
Here’s how the rest of the top 10 faired:
- In 3-AA, the No. 6 Dodge County Indians beat Northeast-Macon 37-15 to move to 6-0, 2-0.
- The No. 7 Rabun County Wildcats crushed Banks County 68-7 in 8-AA to move to 5-1, 3-0. It was the most points scored in program history for the Wildcats, according to Brian Carter of The Blitz.
- The No. 8 Washington County Golden Hawks beat East Laurens 47-7 in their 3-AA opener to move to 5-0.
- In a non-region matchup amongst AA schools, the No. 10 Brooks County Trojans beat B.E.S.T. Academy 38-12 to move to 4-2 in their last game before their 1-AA schedule begins.
- On bye: No. 9 Vidalia
