Friday netted two losses for ranked Class AA teams, with No. 2 Callaway falling to AAAA’s No. 6 Troup, and the Brooks County Trojans beating No. 8 Dublin. It’s likely the loss for Dublin cost the Fighting Irish their spot in the top 10, possibly to be replaced by Trojans (3-1), who were ranked as high as No. 5 just two weeks ago. Union County (4-0) is another strong candidate to enter the rankings.

Callaway definitely stays in the rankings and may even stay in the top five given their opponent. Last week, Thomasville lost 50-0 to AAAAAAA’s Colquitt County and kept its spot at No. 3.

Perhaps the most exciting win came from No. 9 Washington County, which topped Swainsboro 47-45 in a back-and-forth contest.

The remaining top 10 teams won by at least three scores.

Here’s a further breakdown of how the top 10 fared:

  • Kevin Eckleberry covered No. 2 Callaway's loss for the LaGrange Daily News, writing that the game was knotted at 14 in the third quarter before Troup pulled away. The Cavaliers (3-1) head into Region 5 play next week at Temple (1-3).
  • The Valdosta Daily Times reports No. 8 Dublin lost on a late, 3-yard touchdown run from JaColby Brown that turned out to the difference. The Fighting Irish and Trojans are both 3-1.
  • WJBF has highlights of No. 9 Washington County's shootout with Swainsboro. The Golden Hawks head into their bye 4-0.
  • The top-ranked Hapeville Charter Hornets opened 6-AA play with a 57-0 dismantling of Therrell, moving to 3-0 and extending their win streak to 16 games. They led 50-0 at halftime. They'll continue league play against McNair (2-2) next week.
