GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Tommy Webb, Strong Rock Christian
1. Who is/was the most influential person in your coaching career? "I have been blessed to work with some great men over the years. I would like to say Peter Paul. He was the head football coach at Feldwood High School many years ago [1982-86, then at Milton 1987-97]. I got my start with him, and coach Paul was patient with me but allowed me to coach and make mistakes. Coach Paul had a unique way of getting his players to play and practice at their best without beating them down. He was also a great man and husband off the field."
2. Who is the best Georgia player you ever faced? "The best player is even more difficult, but I would give the nod to Hines Ward of Forest Park. What an athlete! He could run, throw, do it all. I personally saw him take QB sneaks and go the distance. He was in an offense that allowed him the chance to run or throw and use his great physical tools."
3. What is the best team you ever faced as a coach? "Early in my career, we played West Rome in the quarterfinals. They were impressive in all phases." [West Rome beat Feldwood 42-14 in 1982 and went on to win the first of four consecutive Class AA titles.]
4. If you were Gary Phillips, the new head of the GHSA, what would be the first rule that you would try to change? "The GHSA needs to come to a consensus regarding the transfer rule. There are too many loopholes, no matter what the classification. Also, I would personally like to start practice and games later in the year."
