Four Questions with Howard coach Barney Hester

2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?"I would say Mike Garvin, who was at Mount de Sales forever. Mike has passed away now. He was somebody that I respected and who kind of took me under his wing when I first got to Tattnall Square and made it feel real special being in Macon. He was someone I could rely on to help me in a bind. He was probably remembered by his students as a math teacher. If you can teach math, you can certainly teach football. He did it in a lot of ways that made it special for young people." [Garvin's teams won three GHSA championships and later five region titles in the GISA. He passed away in 2014 at age 79.]

3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto?"I can't stand those folks that think they want to be part of a program but aren't willing to make sacrifices to make the program the best it can be. I'm talking about boosters, players, everybody, those people that don't want to give it all to be the very best."

4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?"The six-quarter rule. You can only play six quarters a week. I'd like for the JV quarterback to be part of the varsity experience and let him hold for the extra points. There has to be a way to get young guys a letter by playing them on special teams and still allowing them to get quality playing time in a JV game."
