GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Larry Harold, Brunswick
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "As a player the most memorable game I've ever been a part of was the 2001 Florida A&M vs. Southern University game in Bragg Memorial Stadium. It is a very intense rivalry in HBCU football, and FAMU was an opponent that we hadn't beaten in my previous four years at Southern. My redshirt senior season, we went to FAMU and beat them in OT by a score of 17-14. Thrilling battle of wills and momentum swings.
"As a coach without a doubt would be last season's 4-AA region championship game in which our former Macon County Bulldogs dethroned the three-time region champion Lamar County Trojans. That game began with extra bleachers being brought in for the sold-out game. A helicopter flew in the game ball, and Adams-Maffett Stadium was loud beyond measure for the week 10 contest. Lamar County led the game by eight points with six minutes remaining. After a big kickoff return, the Bulldogs reeled off 21 straight points in four minutes to defeat the Trojans 36-21. The greatest single-game performance I've ever witnessed in my 14-year career was displayed by no other than now UGA linebacker Roquan Smith. On this night, he played lights out with 24 total tackles eight tackles for losses and on offense he ran the ball 16 times for 256 yards and three TDs. He literally carried us on his back that game and won the region championship for us."
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "If I had an opportunity I would let my son play for my former college head football coach, Pete Richardson. Coach Richardson not only taught us how to be men but how to be champions in life. He loves his players beyond measure and gave us the keys to be successful no matter what obstacles you face in life. He was a father to those of us who didn't have one."
3. What is your favorite saying/motto? "Everybody ... GOTTA GO TO WORK!!!"
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "I would like to see us use a power rating system to seed teams and qualify them for the playoffs just like they do in Louisiana and Class A in Georgia. The way we seed now we get the best teams playing against each other too early in my opinion, and our championship contest ends up not being competitive in a lot of instances. One of the biggest factors I would use in the Power Rating Formula would be strength of schedule. I would give more points for teams playing higher-classification teams and out-of-state opponents."
