GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Chris Edgar, Alcovy
1. What is the real difference-maker in winning and losing in Georgia high school football? "I am biased because I was a line coach for 18 years. If you can be strong in the trenches, then you stand a good chance of being successful on Friday nights. Without the OL and DL, the playmakers will not have opportunities to be successful. It does not matter how good a running back or quarterback is if line is not solid. The same applies to defensive skill as well."
2. Which player that you've coached is memorable mostly for his character or inspiration? "My inspirational player is Dreke Dowdell. He was an obese offensive lineman that was serviceable as a player. After he graduated from high school, he decided to get healthy. He started a dedicated time-consuming program and lost a ton of unhealthy weight and replaced it with muscle. He now is a personal trainer and coaching youth football. He is being an excellent mentor to these kids and his clients."
3. What is the best atmosphere for a high school game that you've experienced away from home? "Honestly, the best atmosphere that I have been a part of was at Jones County. The [2011] game would decide who won the subregion and would have a home-field playoff game. The game was intense; the crowd matched. Fortunately, we were able to pull off the victory [44-28], but it was a fun night that embodied what is great about high school football in Georgia."
4. As a player or coach at any level, which game do you wish you could play again? "Our game with Greenbrier last year gnaws at me. We lost on a field goal [10-7] as time expired. We were in the red zone twice earlier in the game and did not score. I went for a fourth-and-1 in our kicker's range and did not get it. Then late in the game it happened again. I should have tried for a FG in both scenarios."
