Discovery, the newest high school in Gwinnett County, has hired Frank Hepler as its first head coach.

Hepler was head coach last season at Nova High in Davie, Fla., but is better known in Georgia for starting West Forsyth’s program in 2007. West Forsyth was 49-18 in Hepler’s six seasons and reached the playoffs four straight times.

Discovery will open this year and relieve Berkmar and Central Gwinnett. The school’s nickname, the Titans, also was announced recently.

Banneker hires McKelphin

Banneker has hired Newnan running backs coach Marvell McKelphin to replace Shannon Williams after an 0-10 finish in 2014.  McKelphin was an assistant for 15 seasons at Carrollton and was part of that school’s 1998 state-championship team.

Mount Vernon names AD, football coach

Brookstone head coach Brad Dehem has resigned to become the athletics director at Mount Vernon Presbyterian. Dehem was 18-14 in three seasons at Brookstone and won a region title in 2012. Dehem had been Wesleyan’s offensive coordinator for six seasons, including the state-championship team of 2008. Mount Vernon recently hired Westminster assistant Wayne Dabbs as its head coach.

Shiloh’s Hobbs resigns

Shiloh head coach Troy Hobbs has resigned with plans to take a break from coaching. Shiloh was 11-19 in three seasons, and the 5-5 finish in 2013 was the best for the school since 2003.

Dawson County’s Lee lands in Florida

Jeff Lee, Dawson County’s head coach the past 12 seasons, was hired this week as the new head coach at North Bay Haven in Panama City, Fla.

Ellis returns to Gordon Lee

Gordon Lee has hired alumnus Gregg Ellis, the school’s coach from 1999 to 2005, to replace Charlie Wiggins, who was 11-19 in three seasons. Ellis was 39-40 during his first sting at Gordon Lee and made the playoffs six times and reached the Class A quarterfinals in 2002. Ellis most recently was assistant athletics director at Gordon Lee.

Troup hires Colquitt County assistant

Troup has hired Colquitt County assistant Shawn Sutton to replace Lynn Kendall, who was 12-19 at his alma mater. Sutton has been a head coach at Berry Fayette and Ashville high schools in Alabama and has spent most of the past 11 seasons with coach Rush Propst at Colquitt County and Hoover, Ala.

Lezotte takes Richmond Hill job

Richmond Hill has hired former Aquinas head coach Matt Lezotte to replace Josh Eads, who was 2-8 in his only season. Lezotte was an assistant at Wayne County the past two seasons. Lezotte’s teams at Aquinas were 28-16 over four seasons. Aquinas won its first state-playoff games in school history under Lezotte in 2011 and won a state title in 2013 under Lezotte’s successor, James Leonard. Lezotte was a star quarterback at James Madison University.

Lee Campbell to join brother at Peach

Crisp County coach Lee Campbell has resigned to become defensive coordinator at Peach County, whose head coach, Chad Campbell, is Lee’s brother. Campbell was the head coach of Hawkinsville’s state-championship teams in 2003 and 2004 and was 17-24 in four seasons in Cordele. Lee Campbell and Chad Campbell are the only brothers to have won state titles as head coaches.

Kelly changes mind about Haralson job

Haralson County’s pick as new coach, Jacob Kelly, has backed out. Kelly was picked to replace Alan Lane, 11-29 in four seasons. Kelly had been offensive coordinator at Rockmart.
