Colquitt County has been the most successful current Region 1-AAAAAA team in the state playoffs during the tenure of coach Rush Propst (2009-15). The Packers have won one state title and reached six semifinals. But Colquitt has won only one region title under Propst. Which school has won the most Region 1 titles in the highest classification since 2009? And which other schools have won Region 1 titles during this time? (Answer Thursday)
Answer to Tuesday's question: Wacona was a high school in Waycross that was consolidated in 1958 with Waresboro High to form Ware County High School. Wacona's school building then became a junior high and years later an elementary school, which it remains today. The original school was named Pine View-Jamestown Consolidated, which apparently didn't look good on a school yearbook. So in 1922, according to Ware County schools, the yearbook adviser suggested "Ware County, North America." Students liked that better and shortened it to WACONA." Wacona High fielded football teams from 1948 to 1957, had a 10-1 season in 1951 and sported an overall record of 55-35-3. Folkston was Wacona's most common opponent. The Hornets led the series 8-2.
