Early County and Irwin County tied 7-7 last week, matching the score of their season-opening tie from the previous year. That was the first time since 1992 (Tri-County vs. Lamar County) that two teams tied in consecutive seasons. It was the first time since 1984 (Colquitt County vs. Thomasville) that two teams tied in consecutive seasons by the same score (also 7-7). Ties in back-to-back seasons were common in the 1970s, when overtime wasn't used in the regular season. The most unusual occurrence happened in 1974-75, when Commerce and Central Gwinnett played each other four times. Their last three meetings ended in ties of 0-0, 8-8 and 13-13. Here are all schools that have played ties in back-to-back years since 1970. "I remember it well," said former Central Gwinnett coach Tally Johnson, a GHSF Daily reader. "Ray Lamb was Commerce's head coach. The funny thing was that in the 0-0 tie, both teams had over 300 yards of offense, but no scores." Here are the teams that tied in consecutive seasons:
