Northside (Warner Robins), Buford and Carver (Columbus) each won last week to extend some of the longest opening-game winning streaks in state history. Northside has won 19 consecutive opening games, and Buford and Carver have won 17 straight. The record belongs to Mary Persons, which won 30 straight from 1972 to 2001. The streak was ended in a 27-20 loss to Jackson in 2002. Valdosta went 49-1 in opening games from 1950 to 1999, losing only to 1973 Class AAA champion Thomasville 6-0. It was Nick Hyder's first game as Valdosta's head coach. Hyder would never lose another season opener in his 22 seasons as Valdosta's head coach.
