Mays became the eighth Atlanta Public Schools team to defeat a No. 1-ranked team last week with its victory over Ware County. Many of the head coaches involved in these eight games can be found in halls of fame. They include Buck Godfrey of Southwest DeKalb, Nick Hyder of West Rome, Wayman Creel of Northside (Atlanta), Erk Russell of Grady and Selby Buck of Lanier. Charlie Brannon was head coach of two of the teams that beat top-ranked teams - 1968 Therrell and 1976 Douglass. Brannon died earlier this year at age 83.
