Fifth-ranked Creekview moved into a tie for first place in Region 6-AAAAAA with a 24-14 victory Friday over No. 4 Sequoyah in the first-ever meeting between ranked teams from Cherokee County.
Creekview scored 17 points on its first three possessions and led 17-7 at halftime, then held on to improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Region 6. The Grizzlies, who are 6-0 for the first time in the program’s 13-year history, are tied with defending region champion and third-ranked Harrison (6-0, 4-0), which had the weekend off.
“That was huge for us,” Creekview coach Adam Carter told Alex Resnak of the Cherokee Tribune. “That was a really good defense we played. They’ve shown it all year. When you can come out and get rolling a little bit, that goes a long way. It was ugly at times, but it says a lot when you can win when you don’t play your best.”
Sequoyah had allowed just 28 points in its first four games.
According to the Tribune, Cade Radam rushed for 101 yards on 19 carries, his sixth consecutive 100-yard game. Sophomore Bobby Rhodes was 8-of-14 passing for 120 yards and had touchdown passes to Tyler Stevens and Paxton Nayman.
Sequoyah (4-1, 2-1) fell into fourth place in the nine-team region, a half-game behind Allatoona (3-2, 3-1).
Here are some of the other big stories in Class AAAAAA from Week 7:
*Leading Region 4: Tucker took over sole possession of first place in Region 4 with a 34-18 victory over Lovejoy (3-3, 3-1), which came into the game tied with the Tigers. Tucker (4-2, 4-0) has won four consecutive games after starting the season 0-2, and the Tigers have won 20 straight games in region play. Tucker is a half-game ahead of Stephenson (4-1, 3-0), which beat M.L. King 29-6.
*Tied in Region 7: Centennial moved into a tie with Johns Creek for first place in Region 7 with a 14-6 victory over Alpharetta. The Knights avenged a 34-31 loss to Alpharetta in last year's region opener that cost Centennial the region title, as neither team lost another regular-season game. Centennial is 3-2 overall but 3-0 in the region, tied with Johns Creek (4-1, 3-0), which had the week off.
*Return of the Seminoles: One of the bigger surprises in Class AAAAAA has been Creekside, which is in third place in nine-team Region 5 after a 17-14 victory over Hughes. The Seminoles were 0-10 last year and had a 12-game losing streak after losing to Westlake and Dutchtown to open the 2018 season. Creekside improved to 3-3 overall but 3-1 in Region 5. Hughes is 1-5 and 1-3.
*First-place Apalachee: Apalachee ended a 20-game losing streak in region games with a 7-6 overtime victory over rival Winder-Barrow in the teams' Region 8 opener. Todd Jones threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Goss on fourth-and-goal, and Carlos Rodriquez kicked the winning extra point. Apalachee is 3-3 overall, matching its win total from the past three seasons combined.
*Postponed: Glynn County was trailing Class AAAAAAA Camden County 7-3 in the first quarter when their game in Kingsland was halted and eventually postponed because of lightning. They'll try again at 11 a.m. Saturday at Camden County. The Brunswick News reported that the GHSA will decide Saturday morning whether the game will be resumed or restarted from the beginning.
