The Dublin Fighting Irish proved they were worthy of the No. 4 ranking, defeating the No. 7 Brooks County Trojans, 49-35, on the road. WALB has Trojans highlights starting at the 8:00 mark.
It was a comeback win for the Irish (3-0), who trailed 28-21 at halftime and outscored the Trojans 28-7 in the second half. All of the Irish's wins have come against ranked teams (A-Private's No. 10 Emanuel County; No. 8 Swainsboro).
The Trojans have also challenged themselves with nothing but ranked opponents thus far (A-Public’s No. 5 Mitchell County; A-Public’s No. 1 Clinch County; and AAAAA’s then-No. 1 Bainbridge) and their record has suffered as a result — they’re now 1-3 and likely out of the rankings.
Here’s how the rest of the top 10 faired:
- In their 7-AA opener, the top-ranked Rockmart Yellow Jackets cruised to a 61-0 victory over the winless Armuchee Indians. Kevin Myrick has the story for the Rome News-Tribune. The Jackets are 4-0, 1-0.
- The No. 2 Hapeville Charter Hornets opened 6-AA play with a 43-6 win over Therrell to move to 2-1, 1-0.
- The No. 3 Callaway Cavaliers won a 56-45 shootout over AAAA's No. 3 Troup. They are now 3-1 and could jump Hapeville in the rankings, given the quality of opponent. Kevin Eckleberry has the story for The LaGrange Daily News.
- In their 8-AA debut, the No. 5 Rabun County Wildcats handed Putnam County a 55-8 loss, improving to 4-0, 1-0 in the process.
- The No. 8 Swainsboro Tigers beat No. 6 Washington County, 27-6. Both teams are 3-1. AugBall interviewed Tigers quarterback Kade Youmans, who accounted for all four of the Tigers' scores, after the game.
- The No. 9 Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane beat Dodge County 30-27 on a 49-yard field goal with three seconds left. WALB has highlights beginning at the 6:51 mark. The Hurricane are 4-1.
- The No. 10 Douglass Astros beat B.E.S.T. Academy, 40-28, in a 6-AA contest to improve to 4-0, 2-0.
