Week 2 in Class AA brought us only one top 10 matchup but, unfortunately for the AA school involved, you wouldn't know based on the score. Irwin County, ranked No. 2 in Class A-public, handily defeated No. 4 Fitzgerald 35-8 in a game it led 14-0 at halftime. WALB has highlights beginning at the 0:54-second mark of the first video on this page. For what it's worth, the Purple Hurricane (1-1) were, by Maxwell's Projections, picked to lose — but only by three points.

Other than that there were no major upsets on Friday, and six of the top 10 teams enjoyed a bye week.

Here’s how the rest of the top 10 faired:

  • The top-ranked Rockmart Yellow Jackets defeated Central-Carrollton 51-14 in their home opener, improving to 2-0. Kevin Myrick of the Rome News-Tribune has the game story.
  • The No. 6 Rabun County Wildcats topped North Murray 38-7 to move to 2-0. The Wildcats started in a 7-0 hole before going on a run to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. AccessWDUN has game details.
  • The No. 7 Washington County Golden Hawks edged the Jefferson County Warriors 28-20 to move to 2-0. They were led by Smarcus Poole, who earned offensive player of the game honors, and Dylan Waters, who was the defensive player of the game. It was a tough go for the Warriors, who were playing on just three days rest after losing to No. 10 Swainsboro on a Monday game that was pushed back due to weather.
  • On bye: No. 2 Hapeville Charter, No. 3 Callaway, No. 5 Dublin, No. 8 Brooks County, No. 9 Heard County, No. 10 Swainsboro
