MACON - Starr’s Mill’s Lauren Yoss curved in a shot from the left side midway through the first half and the Panthers shut out Region 4-AAAAA rival Northgate for the second time this season for a 2-0 victory in the Class AAAAA girls soccer championship game Friday at Mercer University's Five Star Stadium.
The Panthers captured their sixth state championship and first since 2010.
Yoss dribbled down the left side and fired a shot that went just inside the left post with 22:45 to play in the half. Starr’s Mill’s other goal came with 5:16 left in the half when a Northgate defender, who was trying to clear a pass from in front of the net, instead deflected the ball into her own goal.
Starr’s Mill (18-5), which finished in a tie for first place in the region but was a No. 3 seed in the playoffs, beat Northgate 1-0 in the regular season on March 27. Starr’s Mill, Northgate and fellow 4-AAAAA team McIntosh have combined to win the past six titles in the state’s second-largest classification.
