First place in Region 6 is on the line tonight when Riverwood’s boys hosts Maynard Jackson.

Jackson (14-5, 9-1) has been the hottest team in the league and bring a six-game winning streak into the game. The Jaguars defeated Class AAAAAAA South Gwinnett 55-52 on Monday in the MLK Classic hosted by Jackson. Riverwood (16-5, 9-1) saw its eight-game winning streak end with a 57-47 loss to Class AAAAAAA Peachtree Ridge in an MLK Celebration at Holy Innocents’.

Jackson defeated Riverwood 61-57 on Dec. 13 in the first meeting between the two this season.

In other Class AAAAA boys news:

Cedar Shoals streak at 15: The No. 4 Jaguars improved to 20-1 with two victories last week, including a two-point decision at No. 5 Walnut Grove. Coach L'Dreco Thomas' team is off until Friday, when they visit Buford. Cedar Shoals defeated Buford 67-61 on Jan. 7 in Athens.

Statesboro also at 15 straight: The No. 10-ranked Blue Devils (16-5, 5-0) won two more region games last week by an average of 22.5 points. They play at Wayne County on Tuesday. Coach Lee Hill's team has a two-game lead in the standings.

Dutchtown prevails in rematch with Eagle's Landing: The Bulldogs (21-3, 12-1) extended their winning streak to six games and earned some revenge with a 86-78 overtime win against Eagle's Landing on Saturday night. Kameron Hobbs went off for 36 points in the win. It was the second time the two co-leaders in Region 4 have required overtime.

In other Class AAAAA girls news:

Buford, Kell remain unbeaten: No. 1 Buford and No. 2 Kell continue their quest for an unbeaten regular season.

Buford (20-0, 6-0) continues to plow through Region 8 competition with games at Johnson Tuesday and at home against Cedar Shoals on Friday. The next legitimate test for Buford may come Saturday night when it travels to play non-region rival Wesleyan. Buford nipped Wesleyan 50-49 when they played on Nov. 26 in the Dacula Tipoff Classic.

Kell (21-0, 12-0) has a challenging week ahead in Region 7. The Longhorns play its two closest competitors, hosting Villa Rica (18-3, 9-3) on Tuesday and Carrollton (13-8, 9-3) on Friday. Kell beat Villa Rica 63-54 on Dec. 14 and defeated Carrollton 62-55 in the first meetings.

Starr's Mill moving fast: The Panthers have put together a 14-game winning streak and taken over first place in Region 3. Coach Emily Sweeney's team is 16-3, 7-0 in the league going into Tuesday's game against Jonesboro. In a weird bit of scheduling, Starr's Mill will play its final four games on the road, including a big Jan. 31 showdown with second-place Griffin.
