Three teams are still in the hunt for a playoff spot out of Region 6-AAAA. Two of those teams, Arabia Mountain (4-5, 4-3) and Columbia (6-3, 5-2), meet Saturday at Panthersville Stadium. Columbia has already clinched a playoff spot and would be the 3-seed with a win over the Rams, who must win Saturday to make the playoffs. Lithonia (6-4, 4-4), which is idle, needs a Columbia win to earn the 4-seed. Columbia falls to the 4-seed with a loss.
St. Pius X and Marist will be the No. 1 and 2-seeds out of the region, respectively.
--No. 1 Buford and No. 2 Griffin, Class AAAA’s only undefeated teams, wrap up the regular season tonight.
The Wolves (9-0, 6-0) travel to Stephens County (7-2, 5-1) looking for their 35th straight win. Stephens County, under first-year coach Frank Barden, is looking to bounce back from last week's overtime loss to North Oconee.
Griffin (9-0, 5-0) faces Eastside, Covington (6-3, 4-1) tonight in a Region 4-AAAA play-in game. The Bears beat Eastside 53-7 on Sept. 12 and have outscored opponents 44.8-10.3.
--No. 3 Cartersville (8-1, 6-0) hosts Pickens (8-1, 5-1) on Friday with the winner claiming the top seed out of Region 8-AAAA in the playoffs. The Purple Hurricanes, led by a touted freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence, have outscored region opponents 48.3 to 7.0. The Dragons feature the state’s leading rusher in Shannon Brooks, who has 2,043 yards and 32 touchdowns.
--Three teams in Region 5-AAAA enter the final week with a chance at earning one of the two remaining playoff spots. Woodward Academy (7-2, 3-1) can clinch the Region 5-AAAA title with a win at Carrollton (4-5, 2-2) tonight. Sandy Creek (8-1, 3-1) needs a win over Fayette County (4-5, 2-2) tonight and a Woodward Academy loss to win its seventh straight region championship. Carrollton, Fayette County and Whitewater (6-3, 2-2) all have a shot at the final two playoff spots.
