Hoping the coronavirus pandemic subsides and competition begins in the fall, the GHSA released the 2020-21 football schedule this week, and several Class AAA matchups stand out after the reclassification cycle.
Here are some brief highlights:
-- One of the top region games of the upcoming season comes from newly defined 2-AAA, where County will play host to powerhouse Peach County on Oct. 9. Crisp and Peach have won their regions for the past four seasons, Peach in 4-AAA and Crisp in the four-team region, 1-AAA. Crisp made it to the state championship game last season.
-- Cedar Grove, the defending champions, opens region play at Greater Atlanta Christian on Sept. 18. Cedar Grove has won 5-AAA the past three seasons, while winning three of the past four state championships. Greater Atlanta Christian enters the region after winning six consecutive region titles -- in 6-AA in 2014-15 and 7-AAA for the past four seasons.
-- Sandy Creek, a semifinalist in AAAA last season, enters 5-AAA and begins region play against Westminster on Sept. 19. Westminster opens its season at former 5-AAA program Lovett on Aug. 21 and plays another former region foe, Pace Academy, on Sept. 4.
-- In 8-AAA, AAAA state runner-up Oconee County begins region play at East Jackson on Oct. 2 and will host Hart County on Oct. 9 in a top region game.
