Cherokee boys, Woodstock girls win Cherokee County titles

The Cherokee County boys and Woodstock girls are the 2014 Cherokee County champions.

Cherokee was led by juniors Andrew Harris, who set a county record in the 200 meters (22.73 seconds), and Ryan Worsham, who set a county record in the 400 meters (51.66). Harris also won the long jump (21-feet, 1 ¾ inches). Woodstock was second in the team standings, paced by two double record setters – junior Owen Bailey in the 1,600 meters (4:30.98) and 3,200 meters (9:38.32), and senior Kylon Drones, who won the triple jump as well (43-7), in the 110-meter (14.64) and 300-meter hurdles (39.78).

The Woodstock girls were paced by sophomore Kennedy Whiting, who set the county record in the 100 meters (12.67), and junior Arielle Hunter, who set a record in the 200 meters (25.69). Etowah took second behind a strong performance by junior Leena Morris, who set records in the discus (131-9) and the shot put (42-5).

Marietta sweeps Cobb County championships

Marietta won the boys and girls titles at the Cobb County championships. Junior Kirvonte Benson led the way for the Blue Devils by setting a county record in the long jump (22-9), while also winning the 100 (10.79) and 200 (21.95) meters. McEachern senior Bryce Glover set a county record in the triple jump (46-6 ½), while Hillgrove senior Jaylan Reid set records in the discus (148-7) and the shot put (58- ½).

The Blue Devil girls were paced by junior Mary Jeanne Assinzo, who set a record in the 800 meters (2:13.94). North Cobb senior Shanel Burr won titles in the 100-meter hurdles (13.98) and the long jump (17-7). Meanwhile, McEachern finished third overall but may have sent a message that it will be a strong contender for the state title in May. Sophomore MaKenzie Dunmore set records in the 200 (24.42) and 400 meters (54.49), while the 400- and 1,600 meter relay teams set county records in times of 46.46 and 3:49.75. The 400-meter team and set a county record in the preliminary round with a time of 46.32, sixth fastest in the nation.

McIntosh boys, Starrs Mill girls take Fayette County championships

McIntosh claimed the boys title while Starrs Mill won the girls crown at the Fayette County championships, hosted by Sandy Creek.

McIntosh got a strong performance out of its distance crew as Taylor Huntley (2:02.96), Josh Reynolds (2:04.01) and Johnathan Hall (2:04.27) took the top three spots in the 800 meters, while Joshua Mattingly won the 3,200 meters in 10:01.91 and took second in the 1,600 meters (4:41.98) behind Starrs Mill's James Adams (4:32.09). McIntosh won both the 400- and 1,600-meter relays, with times of 42.57 and 3:28.07, respectively. Starrs Mill junior Taylor Brunskole set county records in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, in 15.05 and 39.07, respectively. Our Lady of Mercy senior Christian Coleman set two records as well in the 100 meters (10.60) and the long jump (23-1), and won the 200 meters in 21.80. Jonathon Womack, a junior at Whitewater, set a record in the 400 (49.82), while Sandy Creek senior Justin Sumpter set a new high jump record with a leap of 6-6.

The Starrs Mill girls were led by senior Annika Strauss, who set a record in the pole vault with a jump of (10-0). Also, sophomore Alexis Farley won the triple jump (36-6 ½) and the long jump (17-1 ¾),freshman Madeline Hammond won the high jump (5-2), and senior Hailey Gollnick won the 3,200 meters in 12:17.39.  Fayette County junior Chinyere Njoku set records in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 14.37 and 45.53, respectively, while Whitewater junior Noelle Parker established a new record in the shot put at 42-4.

iDareU Middle School Showcase

iDareU, the premiere football training group in the southeast, is hosting its third annual combine/camp for middle school students.

The iDareU Middle School Showcase is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the group’s Roswell location – 11595 King Road. Pre-registration is $50, through March 20. The walk-up registration fee is $60. All participants will receive a t-shirt, have their photo and all measurable listed on the iDareU website, and the top performers will receive awards at the end of the event. Current iDareU athletes include UGA cornerback Shaq Wiggins, South Carolina safety Chaz Elder, Stanford defensive back Ronnie Harris, Georgia Tech safety Isaiah Johnson, and high school all-state performers ML King defensive back Wesley Green, running back Eric Swinney and linebacker Khari Lain of Sandy Creek, offensive tackle Dallas Warmack and linebacker Natrez Patrick of Mays, Our Lady of Mercy defensive back Christian Coleman and Creekside defensive back Cameron Jackson.
