AA in brief: 3 schools yet to complete a game
The new top 10 for AA features has just one change, at No. 10 where Washington County has been replaced by the Model Blue Devils. Washington County was blown out 43-21 by AAAA's No. 6 Jones County, creating an opening for the Blue Devils in the rankings. The Blue Devils beat Sonoraville 22-0 in their season opener on Friday. In brief:
- After two weeks of football games, there are still three programs that have yet to get their first decision of the season. No. 8 Rabun County, Oglethorpe County and Pepperell all have 0-0-0 records thanks to a combination of bye weeks and cancellations due to weather. All three schools are scheduled take the field on Friday.
- Before the season, this blog named the Chattooga Indians as one of five teams to watch despite being unranked. On Friday, the Indians opened their season in noteworthy fashion with a 49-7 win over a Cedar Bluff (Ala.) team ranked No. 2 in Alabama's Class A. Running back Tyler Griffin's 266-yard, two-score performance was noted in the AJC's list of top performances for Week 2.
- Heading into last Friday, the Spencer Greenwave Owls hadn't beat Carver-Columbus since 1998, a 17-game losing streak. In an attempt to reverse the curse for the game dubbed The Heritage Bowl, Spencer coach Pierre Coffey tried motivating the Greenwave Owls by wearing Carver gear. The gimmick didn't work - Carver beat Spencer 26-0 - but nonetheless, Coffey has his program heading in the right direction. The Greenwave Owls finished 8-4 last season in Coffey's first at the school, good for the program's first winning season since 1977 and a first-round playoff win over Washington County.
- Pepperell honored alumnus and former NFL lineman Randy Johnson by retiring his No. 33 jersey on Friday. Johnson's NFL career spanned three seasons from 1976-78 with the Seahawks and Buccaneers. He was also a member of the 1990 Peperrell coaching staff that guided the Dragons to a 15-0 record and AA championship.
- Harlem's Todd Booker and Screven County's Ron Duncan were named to the Border Bowl IV coaching staff for Team Georgia. According to the bowl's website, the game features the best high school football players from Georgia and South Carolina, chosen by a committee of area coaches.
- Augusta-Aiken news channel WJBF produced a worthwhile short about Laney and Aquinas playing Georgia's first-ever integrated high school football game 49 years ago.
- The Valdosta Daily Times' Glendon Poe profiled Brooks County's bye week as the Trojans prepare for their Week 3 matchup against Class A-public's No. 1 team, Clinch County.
