East Coweta won the Region 3-AAAAAA title, beating Newnan in the final after losing to the Cougars twice during the regular season. East Coweta won the championship 5-0, which a departure from the earlier meetings, both won 3-2 by Newnan. The most dramatic moment came when East Coweta’s Matt Byers defeated William Ballou at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. Ballou had won the previous meeting in straight sets. Girls golf: Michaela Owen headed to Auburn

Michaela Owen, a junior at Lambert High, will graduate a year early and enroll this fall at Auburn, where she will join the women’s golf team. Owen won medalist at the Class AAAAA championship last season. She has won three times on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour and won the U.S. Girls Junior qualifier in Prattville, Ala., last year. She is the daughter of Oglethorpe men’s golf coach Jim Owen.

Boys golf: Mora medalist in qualifier

Andrew Mora of Douglas County was co-medalist for the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior All-Star at Chateau Elan. Sea Kim of Duluth, Andy Mao of Johns Creek and Winston Meshad of Atlanta also played their way into the field. … The Brookwood Invitational will be played Saturday at Summit Chase Country Club in Snellville. There will be eight boys teams and eight girls teams competing for the title.
