Brookwood, Class AAAAAA’s top-ranked team, is off to a 10-0 start that includes impressive wins over No. 3 Centennial, No. 7 Peachtree Ridge and a pair of strong Alabama teams.
Brookwood midfielders Brahan Gamarra (nine goals, eight assists) and Alfredo Rivera (four goals, four assists) lead the offense. Three of Gamarra's goals have been game-winners; three of his assists have led to game-winning goals. He and Rivera have had a hand in each of the Broncos' game-winning goals.
Coach Daniel Klinect points to defender Junior Ametepe as one of the primary reasons the Broncos have posted seven shutouts in 10 games. The return of senior midfielder Jordan Locke from basketball also has paid dividends for the Broncos. They've allowed only two goals with Locke, who missed the first three games of the season. Sophomore keeper Andy Harris is 8-0-0 with four shutouts.
Brookwood is at West Forsyth on Tuesday.
-- Despite graduating 11 players off last season's squad, defending AAAAA champion McIntosh is 8-0, heading into Saturday's 4 p.m. game at Greenbriar. Senior goalie Spencer Wrobleski is approaching 30 shutouts for his career and is closing in on the school record, according to coach Bunky Colvin. Senior forward Carson Brooks was honored as national player of the week by StudentSports.com in late February, after scoring six goals in the Chiefs' first two games. Brooks, who is committed to Mercer, is the son of former college and professional star Adrian Brooks.
--Seven different players scored goals in Dalton’s 7-0 win over McMinn County of Tennessee on Thursday in the Cleveland (Tenn.) Invitations. The Catamounts, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA, already has wins over region powers Southeast Whitfield and Northwest Whitfield. Coach Matt Cheaves said strong starts by midfielders Eder Mora and Kirby Perez have fueled Dalton’s early success.
