The second round of the boys state soccer playoffs begin Wednesday with the focus on a matchup of two ranked Class AAAAAAA teams. Top-ranked Lambert (17-1-0) earned a 2-0 victory against Rockdale County in the first round to set up a home game against No. 4 Collins Hill (record).
In the first half of its first-round game, the Longhorns struggled against Rockdale's defense, and the teams entered the locker room scoreless. Lambert took control against a winded Rockdale defense in the second half with a goal at 12 minutes from 2018 player of the year Hayden Fontana, a senior midfielder. Lambert secured the victory with a goal off a corner kick with a minute remaining. The effort kept Lambert's title defense alive. It also won the 2012 Class AAAA crown.
Collins Hill earned its ticket to the second round by defeating Central Gwinnett 4-3. The victory was the eighth consecutive for the Eagles, who are hunting for their fourth boys soccer title after winning in 2009 and 2010 in Class AAAAA, the state's highest class at the time, and 2012, also in AAAAA, the second-highest class at the time.
In Class AAAAAA, two-time defending champion No. 3 Chattahoochee (14-2-0) is still alive after its 1-0 victory against Osborne. Chattahoochee will travel to No. 2 Gainesville (15-2-1) Wednesday. Chattahoochee's victory against Osborne was its seventh consecutive. Chattahoochee won titles in 2011 in Class AAAA before taking the past two championships in AAAAAA.
Gainesville defeated Douglas County 7-0 in the first round. The victory was highlighted by a hat-trick from Pedro Santos and goals from Erik Sica, Lara Aram and Jose Aguilera. Gainesville has two titles – a AA/A title in 1998 and a AAA title in 2010.
