Here's what to watch this weekend in Class AA basketball:

  • The No. 8-ranked Pelham Hornets have jumped out to a 1.5 game lead in Region 1 with a 5-0 start in league play and are 10-3 overall. They're seeking consecutive region titles and will look to pad their lead when they host region rival Brooks County on Friday before traveling to play Cairo in a non-region matchup on Saturday.
  • Keep an eye on the Taylor County Vikings, who are unranked despite winning Region 4 last year. On Tuesday, they defeated region rival and No. 9-ranked Crawford County 61-55 at home to tie them atop the standings at 4-1. In fact, Region 4 is a logjam heading down the stretch, with Northeast and Lamar County a half game behind at 4-2 followed by Monticello at 3-3. The Vikings play a pair of road games this weekend, traveling to Macon County for a region game on Friday and to Central (Talbotton) on Saturday.
  • The Laney Lady Wildcats are ranked No. 3 thanks to a 16-1 start and they lead Region 3 by a half game with a 3-0 record over No. 10-ranked Westside (2-0). They're eying a fourth straight region title and their last four postseasons have ended with them in the finals last year and the semifinals the previous three. They'll travel to Westside (12-1 overall) on Friday to see who takes driver's seat in the region.
  • The No. 8-ranked Pepperell Lady Dragons and Calhoun are neck and neck in Region 7, with the Lady Dragons 6-1 in league play and Calhoun at 7-2. The Lady Dragons defeated Calhoun last month and lead the region by percentage points as they look to pick up another league win Friday at Model.
