Every Sunday, the AJC releases its top 10 polls for the boys and girls. Here's a rundown of those teams and where they are at this point in the season.
Boys
1. Woodville-Tompkins (21-0)
Region record: 10-0 in Region 2 (first place)
Notes: The Wolverines went 2-0 last week against the best of 2-AA aside from themselves, soundly beating No. 10 Swainsboro 81-47 and edging No. 4 Vidalia 53-50, their most narrow win since beating Chattooga 50-48 on Dec. 8. Preston Crisp scored a game-high 20 points in the win, with 5 3-pointers, according to the Savannah Morning News. This week they play road games against Metter (14-5, 6-4) and Toombs County (8-9, 2-7).
2. Therrell (16-5)
Region record: 10-0 in Region 6 (first place)
Notes: The Panthers went 2-0 last week, beating KIPP (68-57) and Washington (67-49), and they're off to a 1-0 start this week, beating A-Private's No. 3 Eagle's Landing Christian 64-53 in the MLK Holiday Classic at Douglass County. They have two more games this week against Douglass (11-6, 8-3) and Hapeville Charter (9-11, 5-5).
3. South Atlanta (17-4)
Region record: 10-1 in Region 6 (second place)
Notes: The Panthers went 2-0 last week with wins over B.E.S.T. (85-29) and KIPP (63-55), and they're off to a 1-0 start this week, beating Campbell 63-52 in the Dream Challenge at Maynard Jackson. They have one game remaining for the week against Washington (3-19, 2-9).
4. Vidalia (18-3)
Region record: 7-3 in Region 2 (second place)
Notes: As noted above, the Indians gave top-ranked Woodville-Tompkins a run last week but came up short. They also beat Bacon County 68-30. This week they play Jeff Davis (14-7, 6-4) and Bryan County (0-18, 0-9).
5. Glenn Hills (18-3)
Region record: 11-1 in Region 4 (first place)
Notes: The Spartans played just once last week, blowing out Jefferson County 73-57. They play Westside (6-14, 5-6) and Josey (8-9, 5-5) this week.
6. Butler (14-3)
Region record: 8-3 in Region 4 (third place)
Notes: The Bulldogs went 2-9 last week, defeating Harlem (53-32) and Burke County (79-52). They play Screven County (1-17, 0-11) and Jefferson County (6-12, 4-8) this week.
7: Elbert County (18-2)
Region record: 9-0 in Region 8 (first place)
Notes: The Blue Devils went 2-0 last week with wins over Union County (56-42) and Oglethorpe County (72-36). They have a busy week ahead with Rabun County (4-15, 3-6), Banks County (12-8, 7-2) and Social Circle (16-4, 7-2) all on deck.
8. Northeast-Macon (18-3)
Region record: 9-0 in Region 3 (first place)
Notes: The Bulldogs beat Dodge County (78-27), Southwest-Macon (62-43) last week, and on Monday they beat AAA's No. 10 Central-Macon (54-52). Central had beaten Northeast 58-57 on Nov. 30. They have one more game this week against Dublin (7-10, 5-4).
9. Washington County (14-5)
Region record: 7-1 in Region 3 (second place)
Notes: The Golden Hawks went 3-0 last week, beating East Laurens (79-43), Bleckley County (78-75) and Baldwin (68-61). This week they have another three games against Dodge County (6-13, 1-8), Southwest-Macon (7-10, 4-4) and A-Public's No. 2 Hancock Central (16-3).
10. Swainsboro (12-8)
Region record: 7-3 in Region 2 (third place)
Notes: The Tigers lost handily to top-ranked Woodville-Tompkins (81-47) but rebounded with wins over Bacon County (68-30) and Liberty County (75-71). This week they play Bryan County (0-18, 0-9), Jeff Davis (14-7, 6-4) and Dublin (7-10).
Girls
1. Dodge County (18-1)
Region record: 9-0 in Region 3 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Indians went 2-0 last week with wins over Northeast-Macon (60-25) and Dublin (73-61). Their leading scorer, Destanee Wright, averaged 29.5 points in the wins. This week they play Washington County (15-4, 6-2), East Laurens (13-6, 5-3) and Hawkinsville (5-15).
2. Fitzgerald (19-0)
Region record: 5-0 in Region 1 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Purple Hurricane beat Thomasville (73-49) and Brooks County (89-35) last week. They play twice this week, first against Ware County (9-6) before putting their undefeated record on the line when they host No. 7 Early County (17-2, 3-1). Fitzgerald won 62-60 at Early County on Jan. 12.
3. Laney (19-2)
Region record: 12-0 in Region 4 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Wildcats beat Burke County (59-54) and Screven County (71-22) last week, but lost on Monday 60-55 to Grovetown — an unranked AAAAAA team with a 14-6 record— in a holiday tournament at Evans. The Lady Wildcats now how more losses than the previous two seasons combined, which is still a good thing. The last time they had more than two losses was in '15-16, when they went 25-5 in AAA and reached the quarterfinals.
4. Bryan County (20-0)
Region record: 12-0 in Region (first place)
Notes: Last week, the Lady Redskins beat Metter (55-36) and Toombs County (76-37), with Olonna Rawls averaging 28.5 points in the wins. She nearly outscored Toombs County herself with 35 in that game. They play No. 6 Swainsboro (16-2, 10-1) and Vidalia (8-13, 4-8) this week. They beat both teams by four points each the first time they played them in mid-December.
5. Rabun County (18-1)
Region record: 9-0 in Region 8 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Wildcats beat up on Oglethorpe County (61-14) before topping No. 9 Banks County with a 59-53 win, despite missing their best player, Georgia Stockton, according to The Blitz. This week they play Elbert County (7-13, 4-5), Union County (11-8, 4-5) and Monticello (12-8, 6-3).
6. Swainsboro (16-2)
Region record: 10-1 in Region 2 (second place)
Notes: The Lady Tigers knocked Woodville-Tompkins from its No. 10 spot in the rankings, beating them 53-49, before topping Bacon County (75-28) and Liberty County (63-27). This week they play No. 1 Bryan County (20-0, 12-0), St. Vincent's (7-12, 4-8) and Jeff Davis (8-12, 5-6).
7. Early County (17-2)
Region record: 3-1 in Region 1 (second place)
Notes: The Lady Bobcats went 3-0 last week with wins over Terrell County (50-32), Berrien (68-30) and Seminole County (77-29). Sophomre Makayla Timpson, who is one of the nation's top prospects for her class, averaged 16 points, 10.3 rebounds, 6.5 steals and 5.6 blocks during the stretch. They play Brooks County (6-13, 1-4), Thomasville (14-6, 2-2) and Fitzgerald (19-0, 5-0) this week.
8. Washington County (15-4)
Region record: 6-2 in Region 3 (second place)
Notes: The Lady Golden Hawks went 2-1 last week, beating East Laurens (61-59) and Bleckley County (59-38) but losing to AAAA's Baldwin (60-56). They have three games this week against No. 1 Dodge County (18-1, 9-0), Southwest-Macon (13-4, 5-3) and A-Private's Hancock Central (6-13).
9. Banks County (16-4)
Region record: 6-3 in Region 8 (second place)
Notes: The Lady Leopards went 1-1 last week, beating Putnam County (62-56) and losing to Rabun County (59-53). They play Monticello (12-8, 6-3), Elbert County (7-13, 4-5) and Oglethorpe County (0-17, 0-8) this week.
10. Douglass (17-5)
Region record: 11-0 in Region 6 (first place)
Notes: The Lady Astros replace Woodville-Tompkins in the poll's final spot after going 3-0 last week with wins over Washington (70-32), Hapeville Charter (56-29) and Grady (52-42), which is part of a seven-game win streak. They've won 15 of their last 16. They play just once this week against Therrell (9-7, 7-3).
