Let’s take a look at the top Class AA boys and girls games taking place this weekend.

Boys

No. 4 Vidalia at No. 1 Woodville-Tompkins, 7 p.m. Friday: This Region 2 showdown is a rematch from Dec. 7, when Woodville-Tompkins won 55-48 at Vidalia. The top-ranked Wolverines are 20-0, 8-0 in Region 2-AA play in their first season since reclassifying to AA after from A-Public. They've lived up to their preseason No. 1 ranking thus far under second-year coach Lenny Williams. The Wolverines are led by seniors Preston Crisp and Charleston Willingham and junior Bernard Pelote. The Wolverines are seeking their first-ever state title after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of last season's A-Public tournament. Meanwhile, the Indians (18-2, 7-2) have regained momentum and are riding a three-game win streak after being upset 72-51 by unranked region rival Swainsboro. The Indians have been a perennial contender under Tommy Dalley, now in his 11th season at Vidalia. They finished last season with an unexpected run in the state tournament, as an unranked No. 3 seed, that led them all the way to the AA title game, where they lost to Thomasville.

Other games:

  • AAA's No. 10 Central-Macon (14-4) at No. 8 Northeast-Macon (15-3), 3:30 p.m., Saturday

Girls

No. 9 Banks County at No. 5 Rabun County, 6:30 p.m., Friday: The fifth-ranked Lady Tigers (17-1, 8-0 in Region 8-AA) are riding a 15-game win streak, with their only loss coming 66-44 to North Forsyth, the No. 9 team in AAAAAAA, in the North Georgia Showcase. On Dec. 15, their streak was tested by the ninth-ranked Lady Leopards (16-3, 6-2), with the Lady Tigers escaping with a 61-58 road win. The Lady Tigers won on a 3-pointer from Laken Stiles with five seconds remaining. The Lady Tigers are led by Georgia Stockton, who helped lead them to the quarterfinals last year and has signed her National Letter of Intent to play for Presbyterian. She is the elder sister of Wildcats football standout quarterback Gunner Stockton. For the Lady Leopards, the loss to Rabun County was part of a rough stretch that saw them lose three of four, including to region rival Putnam County and AAAAA's No. 1 Buford on Dec. 21. They haven't lost since, ripping off eight straight wins including a 62-56 redemption victory over Putnam County on Tuesday.
