Best player in school history: Region 1-AAA teams

Robert Toomer finished up at Worth County in 1991 as the state's all-time leading rusher (7,841 yards). That broke Herschel Walker's record. Toomer's 105 touchdowns also were a state record.

Toomer played at LSU, declined CFL offers and went into coaching. He's now head football coach and athletics director of Royal High in Brookshire, Texas.

Toomer is GHSF Daily's choice as the best player in the history of the current Region 1-AAA schools.

Two others on our list went on to have outstanding NFL careers.

Deion Branch of Monroe played 11 seasons in the NFL. He was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX (2005) when he had 11 receptions for 133 yards in the Patriots' 24-21 victory over the Eagles.

Recently retired Daryl Smith of Dougherty played 13 seasons in the NFL and was an all-pro linebacker in 2011.

Mallon Faircloth of Crisp County also had a pretty good career after being named Georgia's Class B back of the year in 1959. Faircloth became an all-SEC running back at Tennessee, then went to law school. He retired as a U.S. magistrate judge in Columbus in 2010.

Cook's Cornelius Brown is now an assistant coach at his alma mater. He is the only two-time first-team all-state player in his school's history.

*Cook: Cornelius Brown (2002)

*Crisp County: Mallon Faircloth (1959)

*Dougherty: Daryl Smith (1999)

*Monroe: Deion Branch (1996)

*Worth County: Robert Toomer (1991)
