Two No. 1 high school basketball teams lost their top rankings, and seven other No. 1s beat other Top 10 opponents last week to keep their spots.
The new No. 1 girls team in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class AAAAAA rankings is Osborne, a Cobb County school looking for its first state championship in any sport in 50 years. The last state champion for Osborne was its 1964 boys basketball team.
Osborne takes the place of Westlake, which fell to 14-1 and fourth in the rankings after losing a Region 3 game last week to Hughes.
Osborne’s best victories are against defending champion McEachern and Wenonah of Birmingham, the No. 1-ranked team in Alabama’s Class 5A. Osborne (15-1) is led by Nikiri Goings and Maya Benham, seniors committed to Cincinnati.
In AA, Seminole County’s boys (13-2) moved to the top after a 67-55 victory over previous No. 1 Thomasville on Saturday. Both of Seminole County’s losses are to Bainbridge, the No. 5 team in AAAA. Seminole County, looking for its first state title since 1998, is led by Jordan Harris, a guard committed to Georgia.
No. 1 teams that fended off ranked contenders were Wheeler’s boys (AAAAAA), Miller Grove’s boys (AAAAA), Laney’s boys (AAA), St. Pius’ girls (AAAA), Kendrick’s girls (AAA), Holy Innocents’ girls (AA) and St. Francis’ girls (A).
Wheeler beat previous No. 9 Pope 64-54. Miller Grove beat previous No. 9 Tri-Cities 69-53. Laney beat No. 5 Morgan County, the defending champion, 78-62
