Season's greetings, basketbloggers. Just dropping in today with a quick look at a few of the notable boys games on tap during the Christmas break this week.
As you might imagine, it’s a fairly light slate as far as marquee matchups go. One notable exception is Seminole County’s schedule. The No. 6 Indians open the week against unbeaten Calhoun County (No. 6, Class A) on Tuesday, then get tested at the Holiday Hoopfest tournament in Thomasville.
The Indians (7-1), who are led by 6-foot-4 junior standout guard Jordan Harris, have been winning in dominant fashion this season, taking victories by an average margin of 26 points per game. They’ll open the Thomasville tourney with Northeast-Macon (4-4) before taking on unbeaten West Gadsden (13-0) on Saturday. West Gadsden is a perennial small-school power in Alabama the top-ranked Class A team in the state by MaxPreps.com
Collins Hill at Model, Saturday
Fresh off its first championship in the Rome Holiday Festival Tournament since 1962, the Blue Devils will put their unbeaten record on the line against Collins Hill (9-2), the No. 7 team in Class AAAAAA.
Parkview at GAC, Saturday
The Spartans, defending state champs and winners of four of the last five AA titles, are off to an uncharacteristically sluggish start. They’ll enter the Walnut Grove Holiday tournament this weekend as losers of two straight and three of their last four. It’s hardly time to panic, but this is unchartered territory for coach Eddie Martin’s bunch. Parkview isn’t an overpowering foe, but even at 3-7, the Class AAAAAA Panthers won’t be an easy win for the Spartans.
Holy Innocents’ at Buckhorn (Ky.), Saturday
The Golden Bears are headed to Freeport, Fla., for the 20th Annual Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout. They’ll square off with Buckhorn in the first round. The 16-team field features teams from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Kentucky.
