Class AAAAAA got a shakeup at the top on Friday as No. 1 Archer and No. 2 McEachern lost close road games, opening the door for No. 3 Colquitt County – the defending champion – to reclaim the top ranking.
Archer (2-1) was beaten by No. 4 Grayson 26-24 on a 25-yard field goal by Will VanPamlen with 7 seconds left. A year ago, Grayson beat Archer 14-10 on a goal-line stand in the final minute. The game was the Region 8 opener for both teams.
McEachern (2-1) lost to unranked Peachtree Ridge 9-6. Lions linebacker Breon Dixon scored on a safety and an interception return. Peachtree Ridge (1-2) was No. 5 in preseason but lost to Archer and Tennessee state champion Christ Presbyterian.
Colquitt County (4-0) defeated Enterprise, Ala., 51-14, the Packers' 19th straight victory.
Here are other notable Class AAAAAA results from the fourth weekend of Georgia high school football.
-Parkview beat Brookwood 48-9 in the most lopsided game of a series that dates to 1982. Parkview’s Jack Chambers had 404 yards passing and four touchdowns. Parkview is 3-0 heading into its game Sept. 25 against Grayson (3-0).
-No. 8 Walton beat No. 7 Etowah 35-10 in a Region 5-AAAAAA game. WR Dominick Blaylock had seven catches for 249 yards and three touchdowns. (He had a 60-yarder called back for holding or it could have been 300 and four TDs.)Walton is 4-0 for the first time since its 2011 state runner-up finish and is now the leading contender to challenge No. 5 Roswell (3-0) in the region.
-Newton (4-0) beat defending Region 2-AAAAAA champion Westlake 27-7 and moves on to face Lowndes (3-1) next week in Valdosta.
-Wheeler (3-1) got 157 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Benaiah Franklin on Friday and beat 2014 Region 5 champion Milton 35-7. Walton is next on Wheeler's schedule.
-Meadowcreek defeated Clarkston 53-14. Meadowcreek has earned its first two-win season since 2001 and two-game winning streak since 2000. Meadowcreek also has set a school record for points scored in a game for the second straight week. The Mustangs beat Rockdale County 43-18 the previous week.
