There’s a great chance that your favorite Class AAAAAAA won’t be playing this weekend. Teams in Regions 2, 3 and 5 are off and will begin region play next week.
There are only 13 games this week involving teams in the highest classification.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few pretty good games.
Third-ranked Parkview (4-0, 0-0) is at Norcross (2-3, 1-0). Parkview is seeking its first region title since 2005. It’s unclear what Region 7 team is Parkview’s biggest threat. Brookwood (4-1, 1-0) is the defending champion but not as strong this season. There’s Meadowcreek (5-0, 1-0). The computer Maxwell Ratings put Parkview as 13 points better than Norcross, 12 better than Brookwood and over 20 better than Meadowcreek or Central Gwinnett.
In Region 6, North Gwinnett (4-1, 1-0) travels to Mountain View (4-1, 1-0). They have a common opponent. North Gwinnett lost to No. 2 Walton 27-24. Walton beat Mountain View 42-7. The Maxwell Ratings indicate that North Gwinnett is about 18 points better. Mill Creek (3-2, 1-0) is probably North Gwinnett’s bigger threat in that region.
All four Region 1 teams are playing non-region games. No. 10 Lowndes is home to No 8 Ware County of AAAAA. Lowndes should win comfortably. It’s interesting that both have freshman quarterbacks. Ware is going with Thomas Castellanos, who has thrown for 555 yards and rushed for 312. Lowndes’ Jacurri Brown got his first start at QB last week. The projected starter in preseason, junior Joe Almond, has been injured but is about ready to play, so we’ll see how that plays out.
Here’s Friday’s schedule in the high class:
#1 Colquitt County vs Alcovy (3-AAAAAA)
#6 North Gwinnett vs. Mountain View
#10 Lowndes vs Ware County (2-AAAAA)
Bainbridge (1-AAAAA) vs Tift County
Camden County vs Glynn Academy (2-AAAAAA)
