--Pickens running back Shannon Brooks is on an amazing run. Brooks accounted for 384 yards and five touchdowns in the Dragons’ 69-34 win over Lafayette on Friday. The Minnesota commitment scored four rushing touchdowns and threw a 65-yard touchdown pass. Brooks has scored 12 touchdowns in his last two games and leads the state in rushing with 1,729 yards.

--It hasn’t been a good idea to kick the ball to Woodward Academy’s Elijah Holyfield. The son of boxing great Evander Holyfield, Elijah returned the opening kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown, jumpstarting the War Eagles’ 35-7 win over Fayette County on Friday. Holyfield finished with 119 yards rushing on 14 carries and three total touchdowns. He has returned the opening kickoff for scores three times this season.

--Carrollton’s Malique Gallon blocked an extra point, helping the Trojans pick up a key Region 5-AAAA win, 21-20, over Whitewater in overtime. After an 0-3 start, Carrollton has won three of four under first-year coach Ed Dudley.

--Class AAAA No. 1 Buford won its 32nd straight game with a 51-12 blowout of Monroe Area on Friday. The Wolves, who won the last two state championships in Class AAA, are in their first season in AAAA. Their last loss was to West Hall on Oct. 5, 2012 via forfeit.

--Class AAAA No. 3 Griffin, the defending state champion, won its 22nd straight game with a 46-13 victory over Spalding on Friday. The Bears have scored 46 or more points in five of their seven wins this season.

--After an 0-2 start, St. Pius X won its fifth straight game with a 45-14 win over Chamblee. The Golden Lions are in the driver’s seat in Region 6-AAAA and only need to avoid upsets to Arabia Mountain, Stone Mountain and Redan in the final three weeks to earn the region title and top seed in the state playoffs.
