The Georgia Tech baseball team earned its biggest series win of the season, taking two of three from No. 22 Miami one week after dropping two of three to Wake Forest in the opening series of ACC play. The Yellow Jackets lost the first game Friday night 10-8 before taking both games Saturday, 13-7 and 3-2.

Tech’s pitching, particularly out of the bullpen, has continued to be impressive in its depth. It is perhaps the most noteworthy way that the 2014 team is better than the 2013 team, and it is proving critical. Tech’s capacity to stay in games with a solid bullpen and its ability to manufacture runs figure to help the Jackets stay in a lot of games. Given its youth, I think this team will be markedly better at the end of the season.

In sweeping a Saturday doubleheader, Tech relievers Matthew Gorst, Sam Clay, Jonathan Roberts and Dusty Isaacs threw a combined 10 innings of no-hit relief. While they gave up one run (Gorst and Clay walked a combined five batters), the Hurricanes were 0-for-29 against them.

The bullpen work enabled Tech to come from behind to win in both games, from a 6-0 deficit in the first game and 2-1 after 2 ½ innings in the second. The Jackets won it in walk-off fashion in the 10th when Connor Justus scored Keenan Innis from third with one out.

Second baseman Mott Hyde was 5-for-10 in the series, driving in six runs in the first two games. Centerfielder Daniel Spingola was 7-for-13 with five RBI.

Tech is at Kennesaw State Tuesday, at Georgia State Wednesday and then plays at No. 13 North Carolina on the weekend.
