The Georgia Tech basketball team has landed its third transfer of the offseason. Friday, it was former Alabama forward Nick Jacobs. At Alabama, the 6-foot-8 Jacobs averaged 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds this past season before taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team in mid-February.
Over his career, he averaged 7.3 points on .526 field-goal percentage with 3.8 rebounds.
Jacobs, a South Atlanta High grad who played with former Tech standout Derrick Favors, said that being able to play home games close to home was a big factor. He also said that Tech’s offense, which places a high value on getting the ball into the post, was better suited for him.
“I feel like my game fits Georgia Tech because I’m a banger and then at times I can step out and shoot it or drive it past a bigger defender or a mismatch,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs attributed the leave of absence to personal issues that he declined to specify.
Jacobs will sit out the 2014-15 season and will have one year of eligibility remaining. Jacobs follows former South Florida point guard Josh Heath and Ole Miss center Demarco Cox. Heath is expected to be immediately eligible as a hardship case, as his father Stan Heath was his coach at USF before being fired at end of the season. Cox will transfer after graduating from Ole Miss and will be immediately eligible.
Jacobs said he planned to enroll in summer school later this month.
Tech is in the running for Maryland transfer and Wheeler High grad Charles Mitchell, who is trying to return closer to home to be closer to his ailing grandmother. With forward Stacey Poole’s scholarship not being renewed for the upcoming season, coach Brian Gregory has one more scholarship available.
If Mitchell or another player transfers in, that will mean that seven of the 13 scholarship players will not have been on the roster last season. That does not count Robert Sampson, who sat out last season as a transfer.
