Georgia Tech commit Dedrick Mills put on a stunning show last Friday night in a Class AAAA quarterfinal win, rushing for 270 yards and four touchdowns to lead Ware County High over Drew High 46-21.
“He’s having a great season,” Ware County coach Franklin Stephens said. “The thing about it is, he’s a two-way player for us, playing running back and linebacker.”
Two of Mills’ scores on Friday night were runs of more than 50 yards.
“He’s having the kind of senior year you want to have,” Stephens said.
Mills is planning to enroll at Tech in January. Stephens, who coached Tech sophomores Qua Searcy and Lance and Lawrence Austin at Lamar County High, said his understanding is that that he’ll start out at B-back. Mills, listed at 5-foot-10 and 220 pounds, chose Tech over Florida State and South Carolina, among others, according to Stephens.

Ware County will play at Glynn Academy Friday night in a state semifinal. Stephens made a piece of history by becoming just the seventh coach in Georgia high school history to lead three different teams to the state semifinals, according to ghsfdaily.com. He previously accomplished it at Tucker and Lamar County.
Two more commits still playing
With two touchdowns from Tech commit Xavier Gantt, Buford High defeated Thomson High 49-7 in a Class AAAA quarterfinal win. Gantt, a running back listed as an athlete in recruiting circles, had scoring runs of 53 and eight yards and 81 yards total. The Wolves play Woodward Academy Friday night in a semifinal. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof’s son Mic, a junior whose twin brother T.D. plays linebacker for the Wolves, was 6-for-9 for 104 yards with an 18-yard touchdown pass.
Buford is playing for its fourth consecutive state title and 11th in the past 15 seasons.
Grayson, led by Tech commit Chris Martin, a defensive tackle, is in the Class AAAAA semifinals after defeating Westlake 35-28 last week. The Rams play Roswell Friday night at home. Mills, Gantt and Martin are the last three commits for Tech’s 2016 class whose teams are still alive in the playoffs.
