D.J. White missed an opportunity to catch the notice of NFL scouts at the East-West Shrine Game, when he was sidelined by a hamstring injury. The former Georgia Tech cornerback will have another opportunity later this month at the NFL draft combine. He and former defensive tackle Adam Gotsis are both scheduled to take part in the pre-draft event in Indianapolis Feb. 23-29. The NFL released its list of 332 participants Thursday.
“It’s a great opportunity to get up there and show what I can do,” White said. “Not everyone gets that call, so I’m just blessed.”
On the first day of practice at the shrine game in January, White aggravated a hamstring injury that he had suffered about a week and a half earlier while training for pre-draft testing and was not able to return to practice for the rest of the week. White said he is 100 percent and will be able to participate in all of the on-field drills in Indianapolis.
In working out in the Atlanta area with noted trainer Chip Smith, White said he has put on muscle and increased his weight from 185 pounds to 197.
“It’s funny, I don’t feel like I’ve gained weight, because we do a lot of movement stuff, but the weight I’ve put on has been good,” he said.
White has also been training with former Falcons cornerback Ray Buchanan. White has goals for the 40-yard dash, vertical and the 20-yard shuttle, but declined to reveal them. He said that at Tech, he had a vertical of 38.5 inches, which would have been sixth at last year’s combine among cornerbacks. He said he was last timed in the 40-yard dash in high school and was electronically timed in 4.4 seconds.
“I know I’m prepared,” White said. “It kind of gives you a humble sense of confidence.”
