The Atlanta region's first plan for a comprehensive trail network is coming together, but local decision-makers want your input on the final touches.
Walk Bike Thrive! – the new walking and bicycling plan developed by the Atlanta Regional Commission – is now available online for public viewing and commenting.
The plan is divided into three parts:
- Part 1 details strategies to build communities that make walking and bicycling safe and convenient. It includes recommendations for the region's first vision for a connected trail network.
- Part 2 is a by-the-numbers look at how this kind of "active transportation" impacts the safety, mobility, and economic competitiveness of the region.
- Part 3 highlights public support for walkable communities and a bike friendly region.
The ARC will be accepting comments through Jan. 15 at the following email addresses: brushing@atlantaregional.com or bikeped@atlantaregional.com.
The plan is a big step toward creating seamless routes around town for people who want to take advantage of alternative commuting options. Earlier this year, ARC bicycle and pedestrian planner Byron Rushing noted that the 19-county metro Atlanta region has invested heavily in trails like the Silver Comet, Arabia/Panola Mountain and the Beltline.
“It’s not that we don’t have a lot of this kind of stuff. Just you can’t get anywhere on most of it," Rushing told the AJC.
Efforts also got under way earlier this year to develop a statewide network of trails. For more info on that, click here: http://www.myajc.com/news/news/local/statewide-trail-network-envisioned-in-georgia/nmqrt/.
