MARTA will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this morning by unveiling a new electric bus.

The 40-foot Proterra Catalyst battery-electric bus is on loan to the agency as it explores cleaner transportation options. MARTA’s current fleet includes diesel, hybrid and compressed natural gas vehicles.

The Catalyst holds up to 40 seated passengers and can travel more than three hours on a single charge. It can fully recharge in about 10 minutes. MARTA has outfitted test routes with rapid charging stations.

“MARTA continues to consider options to diversify our fleet by testing a range of alternative fuel innovations to greatly reduce our overall carbon footprint while enhancing the safety and comfort of our passengers,” MARTA CEO Keith Parker said in a prepared statement.

The agency will unveil the electric bus at its headquarters at 10 a.m.
