Goodbye, Giant Diaper Kid (sniffle).

After 15 years, my colleague Kelly Yamanouchi reports, the mural greeting air passengers arriving in Atlanta has been replaced. I've got mixed emotions about it.

The image of children at the Centennial Olympic Park was adorable and friendly and always welcomed travelers with a smile. My favorite feature: The Giant Diaper Kid.

The 70-foot-wide photo collage that travelers have seen upon ascending the escalator for the past 15 years is named "Spirit of Atlanta." The young lady in the center of the mural is Orisha Spence, chosen by the artist for her grace and elegance.

I'm not sure who the Giant Diaper Kid is but I've been a fan for years. Here's a video clip I recorded when arriving at the airport once. Nothing said "Welcome to Atlanta" quite like the GDK:

I'm not the only one who has been chuckling over the years:

The mural is now covered by a Porsche ad. After that a new digital ad space will be placed there. Airport officials are still deciding where the mural should go. I hope it's placed in another area of the airport, or maybe the Atlanta History Center.

Long live the Giant Diaper Kid!
