Atlanta's Tyler Perry, Usher among artists set to honor Mandela at Global Citizen Festival in South Africa

The Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa will be packed with star power this December in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nobel-winning anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela.

Dynamite duo Beyoncé and Jay-Z are expected to headline the Dec. 2 concert, as well as Atlanta’s own Usher, plus Ed Sheeran, Pharell Williams and African artists including Wizkid, Cassper Nyovest and Femi Kuti.

Actors Tyler Perry, Forest Whitaker and Naomi Campbell are set to host the festival, where Oprah Winfrey will address the audience with a special keynote on the legacy of Mandela, who died in 2013, organizers said.

"Global Citizen's campaign, which aims to rally $1 billion in new commitments, with $500 million of that set to impact the lives of 20 million women and girls worldwide, will focus on the first six Global Goals: ending poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and life below water," according to the official announcement.

How to attend the Global Citizen Festival

Tickets are free, but you have to earn them. To be among the 100,000 attendees, you’ll have to participate in a series of “action journeys” beginning Aug. 21.

"These are short segments of time during a short period of a campaign where you can earn enough points to enter the draw," Global Poverty Project founder Hugh Evans said. "If you earn enough points and keep earning, you can enter more times. So, it's essentially gamified: the more actions you take, the more points you earn and the more times you could enter the lottery and therefore your greater chance of winning a ticket. Its democracy at work."

Start by signing up for early access to information at globalcitizen.org.za and downloading the Global Citizen app. Be sure to encourage friends and family to join.

To gain points via the app, you’ll be directed to pledge to certain organizations by tweeting in support of do-good programs, such as BeyGOOD, Unicef, Chime for Change or the Global Partnership for Education.
