Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk may not like the connotations associated with the word ‘rebuild’ but that appears the most appropriate description of the current roster.
The Hawks lost four-time all-star Paul Millsap when the unrestricted free agent agreed to a deal with the Nuggets Sunday night.
In recent moves under Schlenk, the Hawks traded Dwight Howard and Ryan Kelly and waived Mike Dunleavy. Tim Hardaway Jr. is a restricted free agent and he could be gone or get a higher salary. This year’s second-round pick Tyler Dorsey is unsigned and the Hawks hold the rights to recent picks Isaia Cordinier, Alpha Kaba and several others overseas.
The NBA salary cap was just set at $99.093 million. The salary floor is $89.184 million.
Here is where the Hawks stand now for next season with eight players under contract, a restricted free agent and a partial guarantee due:

- Miles Plumlee: $12,400,000
- Marco Belinelli: $6,606,060

- Taurean Prince: $2,422,560
- John Collins: $1,614,100 (rookie slot could be between 80-120 percent)
- Mike Dunleavy: $1,662,500 (partial guarantee)
- DeAndre Bembry: $1,567,200
Total: $65,771,372
Schlenk has said he will take a wait-and-see approach to free agency. The Hawks have not made an agreement in the first two days of the period. There are still the possibility of trades. The do-to list got longer with the loss of Millsap.
