The Hawks spotted the Heat 14 points – and still won.
Atlanta watched as Miami scored for first 14 points of the game but used a huge third-quarter run for a 109-103 exhibition road victory Tuesday. The Hawks, who trailed by as many as 19 points in the first quarter, outscored the Heat 43-18 in the decisive third quarter en route to the win.
The Hawks (2-1) got Al Horford back as the center played 11 minutes in his first game since tearing his right pectoral muscle last season on Dec. 26. He finished with two points (1 of 3), two assists and one rebound. He did not play in the second half.
Paul Millsap led the Hawks with a game-high 23 points. The all-star forward added five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 25 minutes. The Hawks also got 17 points from Kyle Korver, who made five 3-pointers. Jeff Teague, DeMarre Carroll and Mike Scott all added 10 points. The Hawks led by as many as 18 points in the second half.
Pero Antic made his exhibition debut after suffering a broken nose in training camp. He finished with nine points in 11 minutes and was a plus-25. Free-agent signee Kent Bazemore saw his first action of the preseason coming off foot surgery and was scoreless in six minutes. Training camp invitees Dexter Pittman and Jarell Eddie were the only Hawks not to play.
Chris Bosh led the Heat with 22 points and nine rebounds. Dwyane Wade and Bosh played into the fourth quarter for the Heat (0-4) against the Hawks reserves to make the game interesting late.
The Hawks next play at the Bulls on Thursday.
