FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons are getting some rave reviews for the signing of defensive tackle Dontari Poe.
He chatted with the local media on a conference on Friday. If you missed it while watching your NCAA tournament bracket go up in smoke, we’ll review some of the key points.
Here are five things to know about the Falcons on Monday:
1. Poe has a weight clause. Poe said he plans to play at 330 to 335 pounds for the Falcons. He's been listed at 346 pounds since the 2012 combine. He reportedly has a $500,000 weight clause contract and incentives that could earn him up to $10 million.
2. P.J. Davis shines. After talking with Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator Ted Roof for an extended period, Falcons coach Dan Quinn was introduced to linebacker P.J. Davis by Roof. The Falcons were one of the teams that wanted to see Davis workout at fullback. The Falcons have a vacancy after the departure of Pat DiMarco in free agency. Davis ran the 40 in the low 4.6-second range and had a 34-inch vertical, which would have tied for ninth at the combine among linebackers.
3. Camp Brotherhood set for Florida. The Falcons are working out the particulars on holding another players-only camp in Florida like last season. It will be held before the team reports for the strength and conditioning program on April 17th. Last year was just skill players, but the linemen and the kickers are going, too.
4. Quinn's schedule. Quinn was busy last week scouting. He went to Georgia's Pro Day, to Philadelphia to work out players at Temple and Villanova and then took a flight to Youngstown to work out Youngstown State standout Derek Rivers. He finished his week at Georgia Tech's Pro on Friday. This week he'll stay in the office and work with his coaching staff on draft preparation and scheme evaluations. The following week, Quinn will attend the league meetings March 26 through 29 in Phoenix.
5. Pass rushers a priority. Quinn checked out Villanova's Tanoh Kpassagon and Temple's Hasson Reddick while in Philadelphia as the Falcon are trying to improve their pass rush. Reddick is projected as an outside linebacker and a first-round pick by NFLDraftScout.com. Rivers is projected as a defensive end and second- or third-round pick and Kpassagon is projected as a defensive end and a third- or fourth-round pick. "We had a good session with those guys and then after that I went to Youngstown State," Quinn said. "I had a nice visit with those guys."
