PHOENIX – The Falcons started two undrafted players and a rookie at their key linebacker positions last season, while Seattle has the Super Bowl MVP from last season Malcolm Smith sitting on the bench.
Smith had nine tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception he returned for a touchdown to help lead the Seahawks to a 43-8 rout over Denver last season.
He was on the field in the nickel package more against Denver. The athletic linebacker raced past the Denver offense and then slammed the ball over the goal post.
After offseason ankle surgery, Smith started five games and made 37 tackles for the Seahawks in 2014. He played mostly on specials teams.
After the Super Bowl, he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent. With his knowledge of new coach Dan Quinn’s defense, he’ll likely be heavily recruited in free agency to help upgrade the Falcons defense.
