FLOWERY BRANCH – Nearly all of the scouts and assistant coaches gathering around the offensive and defensive linemen for the first one-on-one battles of training camp on Sunday.

“It was a unique day,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn said. “It was the next phase of things, putting on pads and don’t go crazy. We have a real style about how we want to practice.”

The highlighted matchup was rookie defensive end/outside linebacker Vic Beasley going against left tackle Jake Matthews.

"That was one of those matchups that I couldn't wait to see because Jake wasn't able to participate (in the offseason)," Quinn said. "That's how you get better. The great thing about those two (is they) have the competitive spark. That's one, we'll be watching for a long time."

Quinn seem to consider the matchup a draw with Beasley and Matthews both winning a few of the matchups.

“That’s was the first time to get some individual matchups,” Quinn said. “The real thing that we wanted to establish on both sides of the line with our offensive linemen and defensive linemen in that one; the finish.”

Also, the coaches wanted to see free safety Ricardo Allen and cornerback Dezmen Southward, who are both making position changes, in man-to-man coverage against teams receivers. Quinn mentioned Southward going against Julio Jones as a matchup he wanted to see.

“Those kinds of matchups, that’s where we make each other,” Quinn said. “It was awesome to start that part of the process.

Quinn was generally pleased with the practice.

“The intensity was good,” Quinn said. “It was real sloppy early on and then the intensity picked up.”
