FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons returned to practice after receiving a day off and things were a little sloppy at times.

During the one-on-one passing drills, there were three straight pass interference penalties committed by Jonathon Mincy, Terrell Floyd and Ricardo Allen. All had their mistakes explained to them by the referees on hand calling practice and assistant coach Marquand Manuel had some coaching pointers for each.

During 11-on-11, the offense struggles at times. There were three fumbles over a stretch of four plays.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn was not happy with the fumbles.

“That’s one of the things from an error standpoint that we can totally control,” Quinn said. “We own that. It wasn’t necessarily where the defensive player made a play on that. They were going for it, the defensive guy was, but the ones that were on the ground . . .that’s something that we can control. We definitely have to shore that part up. “

Here’s are some other highlight and lowlights from practice:

HIGHLIGHTS

--Devonta Freeman caught the ball well out of the backfield during the redzone period.

--Tight end Levine Toilolo continued to catch the ball well. Quinn said you can see his improvement blocking in the run game.

--The top safeties had another strong day. “William Moore has been off to a terrific start inside,” Quinn said. “Rico Allen is somebody that we’re still excited about.”

--The cornerback completion is heating up. “Outside, we’ve got some taller and longer guys,” Quinn said. “We are trying to see what Jalen (Collins) can do. We are trying to see what Dez (Southward) can do. They didn’t play a lot for us in the spring. That competition is there and then who’s going to move inside to play nickel. As we are getting started, the competition there is real. Each day is a good time to evaluate those guys.”

--Falcons kicker Matt Bryant was good from 56 yards out during his field goal kicking session.

--Wide receiver Nick Williams made a nice catch while sliding out of bounds on the last play of practice on a throw from backup quarterback T.J. Yates.

LOWLIGHTS

--The three consecutive pass interference calls.

--The three fumbles. (See above)

--Ryan had a pass that was behind tight end Jacob Tamme.
